Antimicrobial Resistance

rhAmpSeq

Sophia Kenney, Samantha Seibel

Develop a real-time resistome profiling system based on the RNase Hdependent PCR (rhAMR). Use highly parallel multiplexed amplicon generation to enrich for AMR genes and sequence such genes using the pocket-sized sequencer Nanopore MinION. If successful, this method will revolutionize the surveillance and fight against AMR.

Calf SNP Swabs

Emily Van Syoc, Dr. Hayley Springer

Two groups of calves were raised with one group receiving milk replacer with antibiotics. Groups were weaned at different times and fecal samples were collected to determine antimicrobial resistance in fecal organisms. Nasal swabs were also collected to determine antimicrobial sensitivity in the respiratory microbiome.

Antimicrobial Resistance Genes

Various researchers

Using shotgun metagenomic sequencing, we can compare data to known databases of antimicrobial resistance genes to detect which genes are present in samples. We have several projects looking at this information including broilers, turkeys, and dairy cattle.

Canine Vaginal Microbiome

Dr. Jennine Lection

Learning what antimicrobial resistance genes may be present in the reproductive tract of some of our favorite companions is essential for understanding and bettering the treatment of dogs. In this novel study, we are looking at presence of antimicrobial resistance genes in the vagina of dogs to learn what exactly is happening there regarding antimicrobial resistance.

Sociological Factors of AMR

Stephanie Bierly, Dr. Elizabeth Ransom

In this collaborative study with the Penn State School of International Affairs, we are looking at sociological factors that impact antimicrobial resistance such as farm operator gender, presence of farm employees, and access to veterinary advice. This study includes dairy farms from across Pennsylvania as well as in Kenya, Africa.
